The History of the Band

This Akron, Ohio based ensemble came into existence in the Fall of 1997 following a couple of reading sessions held during the Summer of that year. The impetus for the formation of the group was the knowledge that the widely experienced brass band conductor, Dr. Keith Wilkinson, was now residing in the area. From its very beginning the band has striven for the highest possible standards of music-making.

The band presented its first concert in April 1998 and since that time has enjoyed taking the vibrant brass band sound to a variety of locations not only in the state of Ohio but also in neighboring areas. Venues have ranged from prestigious concert halls, including Severance Hall, Cleveland, to outdoor gazebo settings. Wherever the band has played audiences have been thrilled by the exciting sounds they have heard.

BBWR organizes an annual Concert Series and has welcomed several distinguished soloists to appear with the band. Their guests so far have included Brett Baker (trombone), Russell Gray (cornet), Steven Mead (euphonium), David Thorton (euphonium), and Patrick Sheridan (tuba).

The Ohio Western Reserve covers a large part of northeast Ohio and this is the region from which the band draws its talented musicians. The membership includes a healthy mix of full-time musicians, educators and students, and others whose music-making is a hobby they pursue with a passion.

In early 2000 the band proudly accepted an invitation presented by Dr. William Guegold, director, and Robert Jorgensen, director of bands, to become an Ensemble-In-Residence at the University of Akron.

In spring of 2004 the band was proud to finish fourth in the Championship (highest) division of the national brass band championships held in Charleston, West Virginia.
